Why is My Soap Sweating? Surviving the Sticky Ontario Summer Heat
We all know how intense an Ontario summer can get. When the humidity spikes and the heat waves roll in, it’s not just us looking for a cool breeze—our handmade soaps feel it too!
If you’ve ever picked up a fresh batch of cold-process soap from a local shop, brought home an order, or left a bar sitting in a hot car only to find it covered in a layer of tiny water droplets, you might have wondered: Is my soap ruined?
The short answer is: Absolutely not! It’s actually a sign of a beautifully made, natural product doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Let's look at why this happens, how cold-process soap interacts with the air, and how you can easily dry it back out.

The Science: Why Cold-Process Soap Attracts Water
To understand why soap "sweats," we have to look at how it's made.
When we make cold-process soap, we combine natural plant oils with a lye-water mixture. This triggers a natural chemical reaction called saponification (the process of turning oils and lye into soap). A natural byproduct of this reaction is glycerin.
In mass-produced, store-bought soap bars, companies often strip the glycerin out to sell separately in lotions and creams as a raw ingredient. But in handmade, cold-process soap, all that beautiful glycerin stays right in the bar.
Here is why that matters during a heat wave:
-Glycerin is a humectant: This means it naturally draws moisture out of the air and pulls it toward itself. On your skin, this is amazing—it's what makes handmade soap so incredibly hydrating.
-The humidity trap: When the summer air is thick with humidity, the glycerin on the surface of your soap bar actively pulls that airborne water in
-The condensation effect: If you run your car's air conditioning on a hot day and then step out into the humid air, or if a bar sits in a warm car, the temperature swing causes moisture to quickly condense right on the bar.
The resulting dew on your soap isn't actually sweat from inside the soap; it’s moisture from the air that the soap has pulled in!
What to Do When Your Soap Sweats
If your soap feels wet, slippery, or slightly slimy when you unpack it, don't panic. The bar is perfectly fine and completely safe to use. It just needs a little bit of airflow to get back to its normal self.

The next time you bring a bar of soap home in the sticky summer heat and find a little "dew" on it, just remember: it's just your soap trying to hydrate the room! Dab it off, give it some love, and it'll be perfect in no time.
