What’s Inside My Soap? A Guide to Natural Oils and Butters

The Magic of Five: Why Our Soap Recipe Stays Simple (and Why Your Skin Will Love It)
In a world where skincare labels often look like a chemistry textbook, I’ve always lived by a simple rule: less is more. When I started making soap, I didn’t want to create a cocktail of twenty different ingredients just for the sake of a long label and selling gimmicks.
Instead, I chose a "powerhouse" blend. By keeping my recipe focused, I can ensure every bar is consistent, gentle, and actually does what it’s supposed to do: clean your skin without stripping it bare.

The Core Ingredients: A Balanced Blend
Every oil brings a specific "personality" to a bar of soap. Here is how our main ingredients work together:
| Ingredient | The Benefit | Why We Use It |
| Olive Oil | The Moisturizer | Creates a gentle, conditioning lather perfect for sensitive skin. |
| Coconut Oil | The Deep Cleaner | Provides those big, fluffy bubbles and excellent cleansing power. |
| Palm Oil | The Hardener | (Sustainably sourced!) Ensures your bar doesn't turn into mush in the dish. |
| Shea Butter | The Luxury Factor | Packed with vitamins; adds a creamy, lotion-like feel to the lather. |
| Castor Oil | The Bubble Booster | Acts like a natural "glue" to keep the lather thick and stable. |
The Evolution of the Recipe: From Cocoa to Kokum
For years, I used Cocoa Butter in my recipes. I’ve always loved the richness it adds, but as many of you may know, the global cost of cocoa has recently skyrocketed.
As a small business owner, I had a choice: raise my prices significantly or find a high-performing alternative. That led me to Kokum Butter, and I might love it even more. I’ve been trading cocoa for kokum in most of my products and am currently experimenting with it in my final few recipes.
Why the switch to Kokum is a win for your skin:
- Lightweight Feel: Unlike the heavier feel of cocoa butter, Kokum is incredibly non-greasy and absorbs beautifully
- Long-Lasting Bars: Kokum is naturally very firm, helping your soap last even longer in the shower.
- Scent Purity: Kocum has a neutral aroma, which means the essential oils and fragrances I use smell cleaner and truer than ever before.

Why I Keep it Simple
You might wonder why I don't use every exotic oil under the sun. The truth is, not every fancy ingredient should be in soap or skincare especially for us with sensitive skin. By mastering these specific fats and butters, I can balance hardness, lather, and conditioning perfectly.
It’s honest soap for honest skin. No fillers, no fluff—just high-quality ingredients that work.
