The Palm Oil "Elephant in the Room": Why I Refuse to Go Palm-Free
Share
If you’ve been in any eco-friendly space for five minutes, you’ve heard it: "Palm oil is the enemy." Most makers are running away from it, but I’m staying put. Before you run away, let me tell you why—because it involves your skin, your wallet, and a lot of mushy soap.
Why the World is Worried
Let’s address the "Why" first. Traditional palm oil production has a devastating history of deforestation and habitat loss. It’s a valid concern, and it’s why many brands have switched to "Palm-Free" labels.
The impact is real and concerning but there are alternatives!
My "Failed" Experiments
Total honestly, it wasn't until well into my soap making career that I heard about the palm controversy(yes I lived a sheltered life and don't always pay attention). I was lucky enough to already be purchasing sustainable palm from my supplier. I did however try many recipes in an attempt to have a lineup of palm free options, none of which stood a chance against my original recipe . I’ve tried extra cocoa butter, high coconut oil, and fancy waxes. The result?
-They were either too soft.
-They didn't lather quite right.
-Were not gentle enough on the skin
-Most importantly: They melted. A palm-free bar often turns into a puddle in your soap dish after just a few showers if the recipe isn't formulated just right to add hardness to the bars(which is what palm oil is responsible for).
Why I Choose RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm
I use RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified palm oil. This means it is grown and harvested responsibly, protecting forests and wildlife. I choose it for two non-negotiable reasons:
1. Longevity: It creates a firm, dense bar that lasts significantly longer in your shower. You get more washes for your money.
2. The Lather: It provides a creamy, stable foam that other oils just can't replicate without making the bars a mushy mess!
I’d rather sell you one high-quality, sustainable bar that lasts a month than three "palm-free" bars that dissolve in a week.
Let's Chat About This in the Comments!
I know this is a hot topic, and I want to hear from you. Remember to be kind!
-The Minimalists: Have you found a palm-free bar that actually stays hard in the shower? (Tell me your secrets!)
-The Skeptics: Does "Sustainable Palm" make you feel better about your purchase, or is it still a dealbreaker for you?
-The Users: What’s the most important thing to you: how long the soap lasts, or the "Palm-Free" label?

Thanks for educating me on the palm oil issue. I love that my soap from you lasts a long time and has a great lather right until the end. Saving the environment is also important for sustaining life on planet Earth.
