The Best Soap for Sensitive Skin: Why I Switched to Cold Process (And Never Looked Back)

The Best Soap for Sensitive Skin: Why I Switched to Cold Process (And Never Looked Back)

From Skin "Flare-Ups" to Clear Skin: Why I’ll Never Go Back to Store-Bought Soap

For most of my life, my skincare routine was a constant battle. I was dealing with the typical frustrations that so many of us face: unpredictable acne flare-ups, patches of itchy eczema, and that tight, "squeaky clean" feeling that actually signals your skin has been stripped of its natural oils. I had tried almost everything on the drugstore shelves, but I never seemed to find relief from the mystery irritations caused by long lists of ingredients I couldn't pronounce.

That all changed when I was gifted a few bars of simple, handmade, cold-process soap.

The first thing I noticed wasn't just the light, calming scent of essential oils—it was the way my skin felt after the very first wash. Unlike the commercial "detergent" bars I was used to, these handmade bars left my skin feeling soft and calm rather than irritated and dry. It was a total transformation. After a few years of being a dedicated user, I realized I didn't just want to buy this soap anymore—I needed to understand the "why" behind it. I had to try making it myself, and that curiosity is exactly what sparked my 14-year journey into the art of cold-process soap making.

I’m often asked what I specifically use on my own face to keep it clear and balanced. My answer is always the same: simplicity. While I love playing with different scents for my body bars, for my face, I stick to gentle essential oil bars like lavender. By skipping the harsh chemicals and focusing on plant-based nourishment, I’ve finally said goodbye to the "mystery" skin irritations of my past.

A Note on the Craft: Why I Choose Cold Process

People often ask why I choose the long, 6-week journey of cold-process soap instead of the "Melt and Pour" (M&P) method. I want to be clear: I have nothing against M&P makers! Many artisans create beautiful, high-quality products using that method. For some, the process of melting, scenting, and pouring is exactly the creative outlet they need.

But for me, I’ve never found an M&P brand that felt or worked quite the way I wanted it to. I prefer to create the entire experience from the ground up. By starting from scratch, I have total control over every single ingredient—from the creamy bubbles to the specific skin-loving benefits of each oil. There is something incredibly rewarding about being a chemist and an artist at the same time, knowing exactly what is in every bar and how it will treat your skin.

The Secret is in the "Superfat"

The reason cold process soap feels so different is a technique called "superfatting." I precisely calculate my recipes so that a small percentage of nourishing oils (like Olive or Shea) don’t actually turn into soap. Instead, they stay in the bar to moisturize your skin while you wash. It’s the reason that "tight, dry" feeling finally disappears.

Checklist: Choosing for Sensitive Skin

If you’re struggling with flare-ups or eczema, here is my quick guide for what to look for:

-Plant-Based Fats: Look for Olive, Coconut, or Sustainable Palm oils.

-Essential Oils: Opt for pure oils like Lavender rather than complex synthetic perfumes.

-Keep it Simple: If you can't pronounce it, don't use it on your skin.

Ready to reset your routine?

You don't need a ten-step routine to have happy skin; sometimes, you just need to get back to basics. If you're ready to see what a difference the right bar can make, I always recommend starting with my Lavender Essential Oil bar—it’s my personal favorite for keeping my complexion clear, calm, and balanced.
