How to Make Natural Soap-Part 3 of Our Soap Making Series

🌼 Adding Scent and Color Naturally | Part 3 of Our Soap Making Series

Welcome back to our Soap Making Series! If you missed Part 2, check it out here
So far, we’ve explored the basics of how soap is made and how to choose the right oils and butters. Now comes the part that soap makers love most — bringing your bars to life with scent and color.

This is where creativity really shines. From calming lavender to cheerful citrus blends, natural scents and colors help each bar tell its own story.

🌿 Scent: The Heart of Every Bar

Fragrance is what makes a soap memorable. A scent can lift your mood, help you unwind, or make your bathroom feel like a spa.

When it comes to natural soap, you have two main choices: essential oils and fragrance oils.

✨ Essential Oils

These are pure, natural extracts from plants, flowers, and herbs. They don’t just smell beautiful — many have skin-loving benefits, too.

Some favorites:

-Lavender: soothing and classic

-Peppermint: cool and refreshing

-Lemongrass: bright and uplifting

-Eucalyptus: clean and spa-like

-Patchouli: earthy, grounding, and long-lasting

💡 Tip: Essential oils can fade over time, so choose ones that naturally hold their scent well (like lavender or patchouli), or blend them with a stronger base note for staying power. Making your own custom blend is fun or you can anchor your essential oils with kaolin clay!

🌸 Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils are synthetic but often designed to mimic natural scents that can’t be easily captured from plants — like vanilla or fruit blends. They’re safe when used correctly and allow for endless creativity. Be careful to only use skin safe fragrances from reputable suppliers!

🎨 Coloring Soap Naturally

Color adds a beautiful finishing touch to your bars, and you don’t need artificial dyes to make them shine.
Here are some gentle, natural ways to add color:

-Clays (like kaolin, rose, or French green) add soft earthy tones and can help purify the skin.

-Botanical powders like turmeric, spirulina, or alkanet root give rich natural hues.

-Charcoal for deep gray or black soap with detoxifying properties.

-Infused oils — try soaking herbs or petals in your oil before using it in your recipe for a subtle tint.

-Mica powders are a wonderful and more vibrant approach to adding a pop of color to your soap bars

💡 Tip: Natural colors can change slightly during curing, so test small batches first — the surprise is part of the fun!

🌼 Finding Your Signature Blend

The beauty of natural soap is that no two batches are ever exactly the same.
You can blend scents and colors to create something truly unique — maybe a Lavender Mint Swirl, or a Lemongrass Rosemary Bar that wakes up your senses each morning.

Over time, you’ll find your own favorite scent combinations — the ones that feel most you.

🌸 Coming Next Week

In Part 4, we’ll take a deeper look at the actual soap-making process — step-by-step through the cold process method. You’ll learn about measuring, mixing, and what “trace” really means (plus a few safety tips to keep things stress-free).

Until then, if you’d love to enjoy the results without all the measuring and waiting, explore our handcrafted soaps, scented and colored naturally — made with care, creativity, and a love for the craft.
