Why Size Matters: Getting the Most From Your Fosters Fields Candles

When you’re browsing my shop or any other candle makers shop, it’s easy to pick a candle based on the scent alone. But have you ever lit a jar in a large open living room and wondered why the fragrance wasn't filling the space? Or maybe you lit one in a tiny bathroom and it felt a bit too intense?

If you have bought a high quality, well tested candle, the beautiful scent it throws usually comes down to one simple thing: the melt pool.

In the world of candles, size isn't just about how many hours of burn time you get—it’s actually about the physics of the scent. Here is why the diameter of your vessel is the secret to making your home smell amazing.

It’s All About the Melt Pool

The "scent throw" (that’s just a fancy way of saying how well the fragrance travels) is directly linked to the surface area of the liquid wax.

The Science: Fragrance oil is released into the air from the warm liquid wax , not the flame itself.

The Rule: The wider the jar, the larger the melt pool. The larger the melt pool, the more surface area there is for the scent to evaporate into your room.

Matching Your Jar to Your Space

I pour my soy candles in a few different sizes, not exactly what you see in the chart below however this gives you a good idea of what candle size roughly works in a room. Keep in mind, large open concept rooms require multiples or larger candles to give you the same effect.

Jar Size Best For... Why?
Small Jars (around 4 oz) Bathrooms, small offices, or bedside tables. These have a smaller diameter, creating a concentrated scent that won't overwhelm a tiny space.
Medium Jars (8-9 oz) Bedrooms or standard kitchens. my "all-rounders."  and the size of most of Fosters Fields Soy Candles. They create a wide enough pool to fill an average-sized room comfortably.
Large Jars (12+ oz) Open-concept living areas or rooms with high ceilings. Large rooms need a bigger melt pool to fight off drafts and fill up all that extra air.

The "Memory Burn" Trick

Regardless of which Fosters Fields candle you choose, that first burn is the most important one. Soy wax has a "memory." If you don't let the wax melt all the way to the glass edges the first time you light it, the candle will "tunnel" straight down.

A Quick Tip: Once a candle tunnels, the melt pool stays small for the rest of the candle's life. This means you’ll never get that full scent throw you’re looking for. Usually, 2 to 3 hours is the "sweet spot" to get that first full melt pool. Getting a candle back to a good burn after tunneling can be done but not easily!

Finding Your Perfect Match

If you have a huge, open-concept home, one medium jar might struggle to do the job on its own. Instead of hunting for one "mega-candle," I always suggest more than one candle, often mixing scents can create a perfect new scent for your home!

Can't wait to hear about your candle experiences.
