From Hobby to Business: The Story of Fosters Field
Share
What started as a simple hobby quickly turned into a passion—and then into a business. Fosters Fields began as a soy candle company, sparked by my husband’s idea that I should make my own candles since I burned so many. At first, it was just for fun, a creative outlet where I could experiment with scents and perfect my craft. But before I knew it, I had more candles than I knew what to do with and a head full of ideas I couldn’t keep to myself.
Not long after, my journey expanded into handmade soaps. After using bars from other soap makers for many years, I realized I wanted to create my own line of natural soap. I wanted handmade soap that was Ontario-made, gentle, and created with care for sensitive skin—so I set out to make them myself. This transition from hobbyist to business owner was anything but easy. There were ups and downs, moments of doubt, and the challenge of building a brand from the ground up.
As someone who prefers the comfort of home, growing a handmade business has been one of my biggest challenges. Social media for small businesses, marketing, and selling handmade products online didn’t come naturally to me. But through patience, persistence, and a deep love for what I do, I have built a loyal community of customers who appreciate the quality and care I put into every small batch of soy candles and artisan soaps.
It’s taken over 14 years to reach this point, and I’m still learning and growing. Fosters Fields continues to evolve, and I’m grateful for everyone who has supported this journey—from my husband’s first suggestion to every customer who has taken a chance on my handmade skincare business. Turning crafts into income may not be easy, but when you love what you do, every step is worth it.
