Beginner Cold Process Soap Recipe: The Classic 33/33/33 Formula

Making your very first batch of cold-process soap is an exciting milestone. While the chemical process behind soapmaking might sound intimidating at first, it is actually remarkably straightforward once you know the basics and follow essential safety steps.

This classic 3-Oil Beginner Soap Recipe uses equal parts Olive Oil, Palm Oil, and Coconut Oil (often called a "33/33/33" batch). It is widely considered the absolute best starting recipe because it creates a beautifully balanced bar:

-Olive Oil adds deep moisture and skin conditioning.

-Coconut Oil creates rich, cleansing lather and big bubbles.

-Palm Oil provides hardness so your soap bar lasts long in the shower.

💡 Essential Safety First (Don't Skip This!)

Cold-process soapmaking relies on lye (Sodium Hydroxide). When lye is mixed with water, it creates an exothermic (heat-producing) chemical reaction. While lye demands respect, working with it is perfectly safe as long as you adhere to these fundamental rules:

1. Wear Proper Gear

Safety Goggles: Eye protection is non-negotiable. Regular eyeglasses are not enough.

Chemical-Resistant Gloves: Nitrile or heavy rubber gloves protect your hands from caustic splashes.

Long Sleeves & Closed-Toe Shoes: Cover exposed skin to shield against accidental drips.

2. The Golden Rule of Mixing Lye

Always pour your LYE into the WATER — NEVER water into lye!

Pouring water onto dry lye can cause a sudden, violent volcanic eruption of caustic liquid. Pouring lye slowly into water allows it to dissolve smoothly.

3. Work in a Well-Ventilated Space

Mixing lye with water creates brief fumes. Mix near an open window, outside, or under a running stove exhaust fan. Avoid inhaling the vapors directly.

4. Use safe Containers

Use: Heat-safe plastic (look for PP 5 or HDPE 2 recycling symbols), stainless steel, and heavy-duty silicone.

NEVER Use: Aluminum (it reacts dangerously with lye and creates toxic gas) or glass (lye weakens glass over time, which can cause it to shatter without warning).

This batch produces approximately 2 lbs (32 oz) of oil base, which perfectly fills a standard 42 oz silicone loaf mold (yielding about 7–8 generous bars). 

Note: Soap recipes MUST always be measured by weight (grams or ounces) using a digital scale, never by volume (cups or fluid ounces).

-Olive Oil: 10.56 oz (300 g) — 33%

-Palm Oil: 10.56 oz (300 g) — 33% (Warm and melt the whole bucket/bag of palm oil thoroughly before measuring, as it settles unevenly!)

-Coconut Oil (76° melting point): 10.56 oz (300 g) — 33%

-Sodium Hydroxide (Lye): 4.5 oz (128 g) — Calculated at a 5% superfat for gentle cleansing

-Distilled Water: 9.0 oz (255 g)

📋 Step-by-Step Instructions

1.Prepare Your Workspace & Safety Gear:Prioritize safety before handling ingredients.

Put on your safety goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Clear your workspace of children, pets, and distractions. Set out your mold and tools so everything is within arm's reach.

2.Mix the Lye Solution:Always pour lye into water.

Weigh your distilled water in a heat-safe plastic container. In a separate small container, weigh your lye flakes. Carefully and slowly pour the dry lye into the water while gently stirring with a silicone spatula until fully dissolved. The liquid will turn cloudy and heat up quickly (~180°F/82°C). Set it aside in a safe spot to cool down.

3.Melt and Combine Oils:Ensure uniform temperature and mixture.

Weigh your Coconut, Palm, and Olive oils into your main mixing vessel. Gently heat the solid oils (Coconut and Palm) on the stove or in short microwave bursts until completely liquid. Stir in the Olive Oil.

4.Check Temperatures:Aim for matching, moderate warmth.

Let both your lye solution and oil mixture cool until they are both within the 100°F–110°F (38°C–43°C) range. They do not need to match identically, but staying within 5–10 degrees of each other is ideal.

5.Blend to Trace:Combine liquid phases into soap batter.

Slowly pour the cooled lye solution into your oils. Submerge your immersion blender at an angle to tap out any trapped air bubbles. Pulse the blender in short 5–10 second bursts, stirring with the motor off in between. Stop when you reach light trace (when the soap batter drips off the blender head and leaves a faint trail on the surface, similar to thin pancake batter).

6.Pour into Mold & Cure:Patience creates the final bar.

Pour your soap batter into your silicone mold. Tap the mold gently on the counter to release air bubbles. Cover loosely and let it sit undisturbed for 24–48 hours until hardened. Once firm, unmold, slice into bars, and allow them to cure in a well-ventilated area for 4 to 6 weeks. Curing lets excess water evaporate, producing a harder, longer-lasting bar.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to cure soap for 4 to 6 weeks?

Although cold-process soap is technically saponified (safe to touch) after 24–48 hours, curing allows remaining water to evaporate. This process hardens the bar and transforms a soft soap into a long-lasting bar with far better lather.

Can I substitute these oils with other kitchen oils?

No. Every oil requires a different amount of lye to turn into soap. If you swap an oil (for example, replacing Palm with Canola or Lard), you must run your recipe through an online lye calculator (such as SoapCalc) to recalculate the exact amount of lye needed.
