Balancing a Small Business and Family in Summer (Real Talk from a Maker)

Summer Days, Family, and Finding the Brake Pedal
If you’ve noticed things looking a little quieter around Fosters Fields lately, you aren’t imagining it. We’ve officially hit that point in the year where the business takes a bit of a back seat, and honestly? I’m learning to be okay with that.
Summer is always an interesting paradox when you run a small business from home. Technically, right now is when I should be deep in preparation for the massive rush of the upcoming fall and holiday seasons. The smart, hyper-organized business owner voice in my head whispers that I should be curing batches of soap, pouring candles, and staying ahead of the curve.
Instead? I’m procrastinating.
And the funniest part of all is that I’m not even a summer gal! Give me autumn leaves and crisp air any day. But even without a deep love for the heat, summer brings a completely different rhythm to the house. The kids are around, family time takes center stage, and if I'm being completely honest, I have a really hard time focusing and working when the house is full of life and distraction.
So, instead of fighting the current and feeling guilty for not being in the studio every second, I’ve decided to slow things down for a few months. Fosters Fields will still be here when the leaves start to turn, but these summer moments with family won’t wait around. If you’re also struggling to balance your to-do list with your loved ones right now, consider this your permission slip to take a breath and step back, too.
How is your summer shaping up? Are you staying on top of your goals, or are you joining me in a little bit of seasonal procrastination to soak up family time? Let me know in the comments below—I’d love to hear how you manage the balancing act!
